Moorabool Wind Energy Facility Cultural Heritage Management Plan

In 2010 Heritage Insight was engaged by WestWind Energy P/L to undertake a Cultural Heritage Management Plan (CHMP) for a 110-turbine wind energy facility west of Melbourne. This large project involved extensive consultation with the Wadawurrung, Wathaurung Aboriginal Corporation and the coordination of a large field team, with the activity area consisting of more than five square kilometres.

The project involved the survey and sub-surface testing of all 110 proposed turbine locations, as well as at the locations of associated infrastructure such as hardstands, access tracks and cable routes. Many archaeological sites were located as a result of CHMP works, with a variety of Aboriginal stone artefacts recovered from the activity area.

Due to the close collaboration between WestWind Energy P/L, the Wadawurrung, Wathaurung Aboriginal Corporation and Heritage Insight, a number of successful outcomes for both cultural heritage within the activity area and the proposed development were achieved, including the ongoing protection of a number of significant heritage places. The Moorabool Wind Energy Project is an example of the results that can be achieved when projects are undertaken collaboratively between clients, Traditional Owners and cultural heritage advisors.
