Bunjil’s Shelter Project

In 2013 Heritage Insight commenced work on the Bunjil’s Shelter Project for Parks Victoria. Bunjil’s Shelter is one of the most significant cultural sites in south eastern Australia and contains rock art depicting Bunjil, the Aboriginal creator and ancestral being, and two dingo helpers. It is the only known rock art painting of Bunjil.

The project is located in the Black Range near Stawell and involves works associated with the existing protective cage and redevelopment and construction of walking tracks in the vicinity of the shelter.

The project is being conducted in close consultation with all Traditional Owner Groups representing the Djabwurrung and Jardwadjali peoples of western Victoria, and all elements of the project incorporate the views of these groups.
