Cape Otway Lightstation Historic Heritage Permit and Excavation

No items found.

In 2021 Heritage Insight was engaged by Parks Victoria to prepare both a Cultural Heritage Management Plan and an Historic Heritage Impact Statement for a septic system replacement/upgrade at the Cape Otway Lightstation.

The Cape Otway Lightstation is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register and is of State significance as the oldest surviving lighthouse on the Australian mainland. Given the significant Aboriginal and historic heritage values of this place, Heritage Insight’s project team included both historic and Aboriginal heritage specialists who worked closely together throughout the life of the project. Works conducted by Heritage Insight’s historical team include the preparation of a Heritage Impact Statement, consultation with Heritage Victoria, and Permit application processes.

Our team have recently completed archaeological excavations at the site, in accordance with an approved Permit issued by Heritage Victoria. Heritage Insight’s in-house historic artefact specialists and artefact conservators are currently engaged in post-excavation analysis of an assemblage of significant nineteenth-century artefacts recovered during the excavation.
